The Crisis: Why Are 1 Lakh Engineering Seats Vacant in Tamil Nadu?
While top institutions celebrate full classrooms, the broader data reveals a stark reality. After Round 2, only 41.15% of the 1,81,436 available seats were filled. Currently, 167 out of 422 participating colleges have filled less than 10% of their seats, and 23 colleges have recorded zero admissions.
Career analyst Jayaprakash Gandhi and education experts point to four major reasons for this massive vacancy:
1. The Urban vs. Rural Divide
Students now heavily prioritize top-tier, urban institutions over rural colleges. They believe urban campuses offer better internship opportunities, superior infrastructure, and a clearer path to employment by 2030, even if the fees are higher.
2. College Reputation Over Branch Preference
Unlike previous years, students now prioritize the name of the college over the specific engineering branch. Top institutions like College of Engineering, Guindy, PSG Tech, and Sri Krishna College of Technology fill up rapidly, while lesser-known rural institutions struggle to attract applicants.
3. Standalone “AI” and Niche Courses Are Failing
While Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) remain the top choices, hyper-specialized branches are seeing zero demand. Courses like Generative AI & Machine Learning, Data Visualization, Marine Engineering, and Textile Chemistry have not attracted a single student in many colleges. Experts warn that creating standalone AI degrees misleads students; AI should integrate into conventional disciplines, not replace them.
4. Outdated Infrastructure in Private Colleges
Many private engineering colleges have failed to update their labs and facilities over the past two decades. Today’s students and parents research institutions thoroughly and actively avoid colleges with poor placement records and outdated infrastructure.
What Candidates Must Do Now (Next Steps)
Depending on your Round 3 allotment, you must take immediate action:
- If you received a seat you like: Accept the offer, pay the required fees, and report to the college with your original documents (Class 10/12 marksheets, TNEA allotment letter, community certificate, etc.).
- If you want a better college: Opt for the “Upward Movement” (reject the current offer but remain eligible for the final stray vacancy round).
- If you secured admission elsewhere: You can safely quit the counselling process to free up your seat for others.
Expert Recommendations for the Future
- Capacity Rationalization: The government must consider restructuring or consolidating colleges that consistently operate below 50% capacity.
- Curriculum Shift: Colleges should pivot toward high-demand hardware and deep-tech fields like Semiconductors, VLSI design, embedded systems, and EV technologies.
- Rural Support: The state should mandate upskilling programs for professors and provide NPTEL courses in Tamil to help rural students navigate the online choice-filling process effectively.
